Hoin Ji is a multidisciplinary artist based in Karlsruhe and Seoul. His work compares the intersection of the music genre and art movement, drawing inspiration from the world now’s interests, acts, and expressions of liberation, and community. With a background in painting and fashion print, his works evoke what paths our history walked through, and the different methodologies of liberation, appear repetitively in human history, taking diverse forms over time.
Ji has exhibited his work in various spaces and festivals across Germany and Korea, including scholarship and funds from Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM, the Arts Council Korea, and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. In 2024, he stayed in Cape Town, South Africa for a research program ‘intercultural music and media practice’ which is fully funded by BWS+.
His current body of work focuses on the theme of the different shapes of liberation’s expression, the residue of colonialism, researching how music and art, and what specific style tries(finishes) to overcome the influence. With the keyword ‘abstract’, He tries to form the neutral-materialistic zone which is free of bias and prejudice.
Ji uses biodegradable, easy-level materials to create materialistic and easily accessible instruments that challenge viewers to reflect on the fine arts' barrier which is a result of the fine arts colluding with Neoliberalism. It was influenced by the situation in which he had to give up learning the flute, which he wanted to learn, due to financial circumstances during his childhood.
